Well, I haven’t donated yet, but nevertheless I am in the database (my whole family is). Still I believe that there are hardly enough possible donors out there.

Listen up Game of Thrones fans! My friend Janet needs your help! She is looking for a marrow or stem cell donor match (blood of my blood) and I am hoping the GOT fandom will be able to help her out!

There remains a great need for people to join the national registry (chances of a match are only 1 in 20,000 and the odds are very low for people of color especially.)

Joining the registry is really easy. It involves sucking on a q-tip.

All you have to do is swab your cheek with some cotton swabs. If you can’t make it out to a local drive you can even do it from home! (They will mail you a kit, you swab at mail it right back, use the code TEAMJANET when you register)

What are the odds that I’m a match?

1 out of 540 people in the registry go on to become a match. Donating is optional, although if you are a match, you have the chance to save a life!

There are a lot of misconceptions out there about how it works. (It is not like that episode of House or Will Smith in 7 Pounds)

First of all, thanks to advances in medical technology (SCIENCE *jazz hands*) 70% of the people who donate do so through peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) transplant. After a few days of filgrastim injections, your blood is circulated through a machine (kind of like donating platelets) and the stem cells are filtered out for donation. It is very similar to donating blood platelets. A guy on Reddit live-blogged (AMA) his PBSC experience.

The other transplants are done through surgical removal of bone marrow from the hip (not the spine, not the spine, not a spinal tap!) These transplants are usually performed when the patient really needs marrow, such as if the patient is a young child. They use anesthesia for this procedure; people who have donated claim it feels a lot like falling really hard on your butt after snowboarding.

It was so coincidental because last night I was reading about someone who was a bone marrow donor…and they said if you’re scared of needles it’s probably not for you.

Good thing I’m terrified of needles.

But hopefully I can get over my fear and help save a life :)

The kit mainly consists of 4 cotton swaps, some bar code flags (to put on the swabs), a return envelope, and a book about donating.
You don’t need to give any blood for them to sample, its just saliva.
